What Are Story Worlds?
If you’re here, then you probably like books. I’m a business professional, and I love reading. The stories I talk about here usually have some parallels to the real world. I’m also a dad, and care about the future were building for our kids.
Why I Started This Blog
Every protagonist navigates through a larger made-up world, even if it’s a familiar one. Worldbuilding is a term that’s often associated with fantasy stories, but here we discuss fictional worlds from many genres.
I believe the power of stories over our thinking has increased over several decades. Perhaps this is due to the emergence of the online world, because since the launch of the internet people have been reading more than ever. This goes from mainstreet bestseller lists, to the exclusive corners of literary novels, and all the way out to the electronic terrain of fan-fiction.
But all of those fictional worlds are built on assumptions–sometimes never explicitly stated–that affect the lives of the characters inside those stories. You’ll find discussions about those assumptions here.
My Favorite Books
The genres that I read have changed over the years. When I was a teenager, I loved science-fiction. In college that changed, and I read lots of literature. After that, I moved to the southern US, and suddenly I was drawn to magical realism. Now I read crime novels. But I always stop to listen to what others are reading, and take their recommendations.
What You’ll Find Here
On this blog, there’s some theory that you’ll detect working behind the scenes. That’s because although I’m a business professional, I’ve studied stories extensively, both in college and the decades since. I’ll also pull terms from organization theory, and some stuff about financial frameworks, because they have practical applications for this type of discussion. Many people want a better world, but we don’t seem to agree on how to get there. Sometimes, a book can help us see what’s going on in our world.
